You’re looking at the all new icetothebrim.com! It doesn’t look much changed, but in the bowels, in the boiler room and stinky bits, it’s a whole new beast.
I moved over to a virtual private server (VPS) at VPS.net. I’m used to managed cloud server stuff (Mediatemple’s GS service & Dreamhost), which is significantly easier, so I was totally nervous about setting up my own server in the sky, installing basic stuff like PHP and crap I’ve never had to think about before… all through command line!?
The verdict? I’m really pleased! It took about a weekend of anxious, hair-losing, mind-drowning confusion, but I finally started understanding some of the basic friggen concepts of internet.
Truth be told, I wouldn’t have been able to do this on my own. Willie Jackson, a server optimization guy who I met on the Twitters, helped me a ton from understanding the easy stuff to educating me on advanced stuff, etc.So, What Have We Got Going On?
- Debian cloud optimized OS
- PHP, MySql, Apache, etc.
- Nginx as a front end proxy (I don’t know… ask Willie)
- APC opcode cache for caching PHP
- W3TotalCache plugin for WordPress
I mean, it’s not the fastest site around, but it’s pretty quick, right? And this is with the cheapest options from VPS.net. Actually, i just clicked about a little and this thing is friggen blazing!
Ok, I wanted to tell you more and make note of everything you should do for your own server, but I don’t have time for that. In the mean time, just be yourself.

Don’t be ridiculous! How many times did you same some sh*t like, “So, what this code is saying here is, ‘if we’re on virtual host bechase through any port, then rewrite all the suck into awesome, and re-code messed up code to be correct, also color correct any images and inject some smart and clever every 90th word. Then this last bit just says go really fast.’”
